NFL Executives Believe It Is A Foregone Conclusion That Stephon Gilmore Will Be Traded In The Offseason
Bill Belichick has a big task in front of him this offseason if he is going to put the Patriots back in contention next season, and that may mean a little addition by subtraction of the Patriots best defensive player.
2019 Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore is still elite, but being on the wrong side of 30 when premier corners tend to decline, and $15 million owed to him next season against the cap, the Patriots best move could be to get what they can for him. The Pats could save $7 million and pick up some valuable picks and players for him now and still be strong in the secondary.
Multiple executives believe it’s a “foregone conclusion” that the Patriots will trade Star CB Stephon Gilmore this offseason, per Jason La Canfora.
There was talk that Gilmore could be on the move last season, but things are looking serious this time.
The Patriots are expected to approach Gilmore about his contract this offseason, according to Jeff Howe and an extension would help both sides. However, they would have to agree on a new deal
If Gilmore is looking for $17 million+ per year, Jeff Howe believes that the Patriots will look to trade him. But if Gilmore is willing to compromise between $14-$15 million, then Gilmore could be back. Gilmore is not likely to give the Pats a hometown discount at this stage of his career though.
