Video: Patriots David Andrews Calls The Late Hit On Mac Jones A BS Play

Emotions tend to run high in tightly contested games, and that was surely the case on Sunday between the Patriots, and Chargers. While some conflict is certainly to be expected, dirty late hits on your starting quarterback is far from acceptable.

That is exactly what happened midway through the second quarter when the Chargers called a timeout, and the play was blown dead after the ball was snapped.

Everybody on the field heard the whistle and stopped play when Chargers defensive end Jerry Tillery took a cheap shot on Mac Jones with his back turned. Somehow it was missed by the referees and there was no flag on the play, but the Patriots offensive line was more than ready to stand up for Mac

“I heard a whistle. I think 21 other guys heard a whistle. So I didn’t take too kindly to that,” center David Andrews said. “I thought that was kind of a BS play, but it is what it is. Mac is a tough kid and shows a lot of poise each and every week to stand in there.”

Andrews ran over to push Tillery away from Jones, and was followed by Shaq Mason, Hunter Henry and Ted Karras. Jones, who has shown a lot of toughness out on the field was able to shrug it off.

“It is what it is. I think there’s some stuff here and there,” Jones said. “But I do appreciate the offensive line and my team for having my back, we just can’t let that affect the next play. With me, I didn’t feel tension or anything like that. I just kept playing and I think everyone on our team did. We played hard and we played for 60 minutes and that’s all that matters.”

Tillery could still be facing a fine in the upcoming days after the play is reviewed by the league.
