The Patriots Gained A Minimum Of $500,000 In Cap Space After Cam Newton Signed With Carolina
The Patriots got a gift today after Cam Newton officially returned to the Carolina Panthers. The Patriots will gain a minimum of $500,000 on next years salary cap, and that number could go up if Newton hits his incentives.
Newton signed with Carolina after Sam Darnold was injured against the Patriots last weekend so it seems the Patriots also did him a favor.
Per Joseph Person of The Athletic, the agreement is a one-year deal that’ll run through the rest of 2021.
Newton was drafted by Carolina with the first overall pick of the 2011 NFL draft. He went on to spend nine fateful years with the team, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards (29,041), passing touchdowns (182) and rushing touchdowns (58).
Newton threw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions while rushing for another 592 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Pats last year. The Patriots released Newton back in August when it was clear that Mac Jones was ready to lead the franchise.
Big-time reunion: The #Panthers are signing former franchise QB Cam Newton after the meeting with Carolina brass today. Thanks to the Sam Darnold injury, Cam is back with the #Panthers.

Bumping up since Cam Newton has indeed signed with the Panthers. His signing today raises the minimum credit to $537,500 if he is on their roster for the rest of the season. The more cash he gets from the Panthers the more it helps the Patriots 2022 cap. https://t.co/hH3pMS4z3m
