Cam Newton Is Not Worried About Being Named Starting Quarterback At This Time
All signs point to Cam Newton being named the starting quarterback this season, but Cam Newton still believes there is a long way to go for him to improve. Newton has been seeing the bulk of the first team reps, but Cam told reporters that he doesn’t consider himself a guarantee to be the starter in Week 1.
“Absolutely not. Every day is a work day for me,” Newton said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. “That label is not important to me right now,” Newton told reporters. “I have so much I need to get better at, so much I need to learn, so much I need to be comfortable with. Throughout this process, that’s the last thing that I’m pretty much worried about.”
Newton said that there are times things aren’t firing mentally at the line of scrimmage the way he’d hope. Newton is getting a lot of help from Brian Hoyer , who Newton respects an said he is “as sharp as can be” when it comes to the playbook. Hoyer has always had a great feel for the offense even if he doesn’t necessarily have the talent to make it work. If they can combine Hoyer’s knowledge and Cam’s athleticism, Newton will be a legit threat to carry this team deep into the playoffs.
