Alex Verdugo Traded To NY Yankees in 4-player trade with Red Sox

No this is not April Fools Day and this ain’t no joke. Red Sox OF Alex Verdugo has been traded to the Yankees.

In a rare deal with their biggest rivals, the Yankees acquired outfielder Alex Verdugo from the Red Sox on Tuesday night for a trio of pitchers, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The clubs have not confirmed the news.

Verdugo posted a .264/.324/.421 slash line with Boston in 2023, hitting 13 home runs and stealing five bases. The 27-year-old is eligible to become a free agent after the 2024 season. He was the biggest piece for the Red Sox in the February 2020 trade that sent Mookie Betts to the Dodgers.

Red Sox received right-handers Richard Fitts (the Yanks’ No. 12 prospect), Greg Weissert and Nicholas Judice. Weissert, 28, made his MLB debut in 2022 and owns a career 4.60 ERA in 31 1/3 innings. Fitts had a 3.57 ERA in 27 starts for Double-A Somerset in 2023, while Judice was the Yankees’ eighth-round Draft pick in 2023 out of Louisiana-Monroe.
