Xander Bogaerts Has Reportedly Severed Ties With The Red Sox

It appears the Red Sox will not be bringing back Xander Bogaerts. According to Peter Gammons, the Red Sox star shortsop will be finding a new home.

Gammons tweeted on Wednesday that Bogaerts has “severed ties” with Boston and “won’t be going back.” Gammons heard that news from three different front offices.

Apparently Bogaerts, who just turned 30 is seeking $25-$28 million per year, and priced himself out of the Red Sox plans. At this point you can probably expect the Red Sox to find a stop gap shortstop with top prospect Marcelo Mayer likely to make his debut by the start of the 2024 season.

The Padres who are one of the potential suitors recently reached out to Scott Boras asking if Xander Bogaerts would be open to move around the infield, including 1B and 2B.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, “The speculation among agents who don’t represent Xander Bogaerts is that he’s going to do very well, given that he’s coveted by a lot of teams, and they’re predicting a final deal total that’ll be many tens of millions of dollars more than the final Red Sox offer in the spring.”
