Video: Rex Ryan: ‘This Might Be Bill Belichick’s Best Coaching Job Yet’

Former NFL rival head coach and current ESPN analyst Rex Ryan believes that Bill Belichick might be doing his best coaching job yet with this season’s roster. While it may be hard for many to separate Bill Belichick the coach from Bill Belichick the GM, Rex may actually have a point here.

Appearing on Get Up this morning, Ryan praised his long-time rival.

“When I look at it, because I compare the current New England roster to when I coached against them, there’s one player on that team that would have started for those teams — and that’s Matt Judon,” Ryan said. “Everything else, none of those guys would have started. That’s why I call it a JV team.

“But the roster may be JV, but the coaching’s not. This dude has done an amazing job. Might be his best year coaching that I’ve ever seen. And what he does is he plays to the strength of this team. You have a great defense. And here’s the thing about that defense: it doesn’t just stop you or make you punt, or whatever, it forces turnovers. But that’s not it, they score with those turnovers.”

Of course, many of the roster errors have been self-inflicted wounds from Belichick’s decision as a GM, but he has not lost any of his coaching abilities. The Patriots organization will need to make a decision on how much power Belichick should have going forward in the offseason, while finding a happy medium to keep him around.

That could all change if they somehow shock the world next weekend in Buffalo. Despite their obvious struggles on offense, this team could have a much better record minus a few mistakes. If they were to find their way into the playoffs, it would be a lot harder for Robert Kraft to negotiate any major changes.
