The Ringer’s Bill Simmons Says This Patriots Season Is Starting To Feel Like The 2001 Season

Halfway through the New England Patriots season the Pats sit at 4-4, and in a prime position to make a run for the playoffs. Some would say it is starting to feel eerily similar to the 2001 season. The Patriots defense is starting to figure things out, and Mac Jones, and the Patriots offense are starting to find consistency. The offensive lines health is also a welcome sight. While the Pats may only be 4-4 they are only a few plays away from being 7-1, and with a soft schedule coming up, this team could make some noise.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons is among those who are starting to make the comparison.

“Patriots, 30-to-1 on FanDuel right now to win the AFC,” said Simmons. “Let’s go through the AFC teams. Who’s owned Buffalo for the last 20 years? Bill Belichick. Ravens. Do you trust their defense? I don’t. Kansas City. Do you like what you see? I don’t. Do you like the Raiders or Chargers? I don’t. Steelers have (Ben) Roethlisberger. No thanks. Go through the teams. Tennessee. No Derrick Henry. This is starting to feel 2001-ish to me.”

While nobody is thinking Super Bowl at the moment, and the end results are not likely to be the same as the miraculous 2001 season, excitement is building. It is clear that Mac Jones is a perfect fit for this team, and if the Patriots can continue to improve over the rest of the season, they could be a surprise participant in this years playoffs.
