Now Could Be The Perfect Time To Trade Cam Newton And Other Assets

I know this may sound sacrilegious to many Pats fans, but there is no better time than now to trade Cam Newton away. I have been a huge supporter of Cam since he was signed during the summer, but the reality set in after todays 33-6 spanking at home by the 49ers that our team isn’t going far this season. I never give up hope on this team, but we are at a crossroads where we are currently not good enough as is, and making moves to get better could be more costly than selling off our goods and starting fresh.

There are too many good teams in the AFC this year. The reality is the Patriots are not doing shit against Kansas City, Baltimore, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Buffalo or any of those good teams. At the beginning of the season I thought we would have a hard time beating Buffalo, and I have seen nothing that has changed my mind. Now that we are falling behind a decision needs to be made. So we keep fighting or start planning for next year? The wise move would be to sell off our assets and start the rebuild now. Cam is on the cheapest contract imaginable. I’m not sure we would even get that much for him, but he should be an easy sell, to Dallas perhaps. At this point we should take whatever we can get. There is no sense in finishing 8-8. Sell everything we can including Joe Thuney now, and get Jarett Stidham his reps to find out if he has any chance in the future. Our offense as is can not get it done. Edelman had a fantastic career but he is so banged up he might as well hang up his cleats at the end of the season, and Harry has been a total bust. Belichick’s kryptonite has been drafting wide receivers. Harry was supposed to make a big leap this season, the kid has all the physical skills in the world, but he can’t get any separation off the line of scrimmage. None of these pieces can possibly help Cam moving forward.

If the Patriots do trade for help, sure they could improve, but after the Sanu deal that cost us our 2nd round pick last season, are they going to take that risk again? I know this goes against every instinct in Bill Belichick’s brain, but if we can sell our assets now and sink into the abyss this season, the Patriots could be setup for a much brighter future beginning next season with high draft picks and tons of salary cap space.
