Matthew Slater Defends Bill Belichick And The Patriots Way In His Latest Interview

Patriots captain Matthew Slater, recently appeared on WEEI’s Dale & Keefe show, and was asked about players being worn out from playing for Bill Belichick and the strict way the Patriots handle their business.

“I can’t speak to other guys and what their situations may be personally. I know everyone’s experience I the National Football League is different. Everyone’s experience as a Patriot is different,” Slater said. “I know that as far as I’m concerned I’m so grateful for the time that I’ve had here, the opportunities that have been afforded to me by Mr. Kraft, Coach Belichick and the organization and I realize how unique my career has been as a special teams player. I don’t know that many organizations would have valued me the way that they have.

“So I’m certainly thankful to be here. I’m having a ton of fun. I’ve had some great memories over the years. I’ve forged some great relationships that I’ll carry with me the rest of my life. So you won’t hear me saying that I have anything other than positive feelings toward this organization.”

Slater has always been a highly disciplined and unselfish player. That seem to be a dying breed in the NFL nowadays. Many athletes are not able to handle the pressure because they are used to being pampered and in control of their own situation for the most part. Playing for Belichick is another animal though. Belichick expects his players to act like men and has no plans on stroking anyone’s ego. Many veterans have been unable to survive in the Patriots atmosphere because of this, but it also explains why the men left standing have won numerous championships.

Slater who is known for being the greatest special teams player in team history is currently the longest-tenured Patriots player, after Brady left. Slater will be entering his 13th NFL season.
