Details On Cam Newton’s Contract Show It Was An Absolute Steal For The Patriots
The details of the Patriots signing Cam Newton have just been released, and they put the Patriots in the perfect position. This deal is heavily weighted in the Patriots favor.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the one-year contract has a $1.05 million minimum base salary, with only $550,000 guaranteed. Newton can earn up to $6.45 million in incentives and per game roster bonuses.
This contract also comes with no clause restricting the Patriots from using the franchise tag at the end of the season, if they choose to do so.
Newton will be competing against 2nd year quarterback Jarrett Stidham for the starting job. The worst case scenario is they cut Newton loose if he doesn’t pan out. The ball is clearly in the Patriots court if Cam is named the starter, and he has a lot of success. This is another great chess move by Belichick.
Cam Newton contract: 1 yr $1.05m minimum base. Just $550k guaranteed at signing Up to $6.45m in incentives/per game roster bonuses. And no clause restricting a 2021 franchise tag. Patriots get a former MVP for less than many pay backup OL
