DeAndre Hopkins Will Visit The Patriots Next Week

NFL insider Ian Rapopport is reporting that free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins will visit the New England Patriots next week. Hopkins, is the top wide receiver free agent this off season after being released by the Arizona Cardinals a few weeks ago.

Hopkins is weighing his options, and reportedly has a “strong” chance of reuniting with his former QB Deshaun Watson in Cleveland. He’s also been linked to the Titans, Bills, and Chiefs.

If Hopkins does decide to come to New England he would immediately become Mac Jones number one receiver and would instantly make the Patriots offense look a lot better on paper.

There are some obvious hurdles that the Patriots would need to get over to sign Hopkins. There are questions if he would be willing to work with his former head coach Bill O’Brien, who is currently the Patriots offensive coordinator. Perhaps Hopkins respect for Bill Belichick will outweigh any issue he had with his former coach.

One big advantage the Patriots may have over the others is they have the most salary cap space.

Bill Belichick is also a big fan of Hopkins.

“He’s got tremendous ball skills,” Belichick said, “He catches everything. Has great hands. He’s long so he’s never covered, even if he’s covered there’s a place where the ball can be that he can get it and still make the catch. Great coordination on the sidelines. And he doesn’t really look it, but he’s a strong kid. You see him break tackles. He’s a strong kid in terms of creating separation on routes, yards after contact, tough yards like around the goal line or that extra yard for a first down type of thing.

“He’s a smart football player. Very savvy. I’d say his ball skills are at the very elite level of guys that I’ve seen in this league. He’s up there with whoever the top guys are. The Cris Carters of the world. Guys like that. I think he’s every bit as good as anybody I’ve ever coached against.”
