David Andrews Gave The Patriots A Huge Hometown Discount To Stay In New England
The naysayers have been saying that since Tom Brady left the Patriots that players will not want to play for Bill Belichick. They said free agents would not want to come to New England, and that current players would not give the team a discount to stay here. Both of those theories were laughingly disproved over the past week. It appeared the Patriots were about to lose center David Andrews to free agency before he surprisingly resigned with the team, but the real surprise is how little the Patriots had to pay to retain his service.
Andrews signed a four year deal worth a maximum of $19 million, plus $2 million in incentives. The first two years worth $6.5 million are fully guaranteed. He can make up to $8 million if he plays in all 32 games and then $10 million if he reaches incentives. This is far below market value. He will make less money this year than Ted Karras who will serve as a backup and get paid $4 million this season.
Andrews should never have to buy a beer again while he is in New England after taking this kind of discount. David is clearly a believer in what Bill Belichick is putting together and this will help the Patriots immensely moving forward.
