Cam Newton Had His Best Day Yet And Is Running Away With The Patriots Starting QB Job
Cam Newton showed signs of further development today after having his best day of practice since signing with the Patriots. Newton finally got extended reps today, and it is clear he is becoming more comfortable with the offense. Jarrett Stidham did not participate in any team drills this morning, and time is not on his side if he is looking to make a strong push for the starting job. As we get closer to the start of the season, and with Cam showing he is in good health, his ability to learn the playbook, and continued improvement on the field, it looks like Newton will get the staring quarterback gig this season.
Newton saw 12 snaps in 7-on-7 periods, going 8-for-12. And he went 19-27 with seven completions to Julian Edelman as they try to build a connection.
“Getting to know each other as people on the field, off the field,” Edelman said. “Trying to build a rapport. That’s what I’m doing also with Hoy and with Stid but those guys have been around. Gotta catch up with Cam.”
7v7s: Newton 8/12; Hoyer 3/6
11v11s: Newton 20/27; Hoyer 10/12, INT
Total: Newton 28/39; Hoyer 13/18, INT
This was Cam Newton’s best day as a Patriot. IMO it’s his job to lose.

Patriots practice concludes. Cam Newton/Brian Hoyer get the bulk of the work, as it feels like Jarrett Stidham’s status in the QB picture is fading the last two practices.
Newton-Julian Edelman connection was notable to me today. Comfort level between them growing.
