Boston Celtics Have Suspended Head Coach Ime Udoka For The 2022-23 Season
Boston Celtics fans didn’t get the news they wanted to hear tonight. The hammer has dropped on the Celtics head coach Ime Udoka after he violated team rules. Udoka had a consensual relationship with a female Celtics staffer.
“A decision about his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later date,” the Celtics said in a statement. “The suspension takes effect immediately.”
Assistant coach Joe Mazzulla will serve as interim coach, according to ESPN.
“I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down,” Udoka said in a statement released to ESPN. “I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team’s decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment.”
While Udoka was in the wrong for violating team rules, the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. While the Celtics have not said anything about Udoka’s future beyond this season, it wouldn’t be surprising if the rising star coach has coached his final game with the Celtics, and that is very unfortunate.
The Boston Celtics have suspended head coach Ime Udoka for the entire 2022-23 season.
