Peter Gammons Believes Mookie Betts Will Get Nowhere Near The $310 Million The Red Sox Offered Him

Legendary MLB insider Peter Gammons, thinks players entering free agency this winter are going to be losing a significant amount in revenue. The player that stands to lose the most will be Mookie Betts, who was offered a $310 million dollar deal by the Red Sox. Betts rejected the offer because he felt like he deserved more, and was traded away to the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to Gammons, Mookie will not even come remotely close to the Sox offer in the post coronavirus world.

“Free agency is not going to even be, there are no screams, free agency is going to be a whisper for the next three years,” Gammons said. “There are few people that I like better in baseball than Mookie Betts. I thought he was going to make between $350 (million) to $400 million. He’d be lucky to get up to $250 (million) in free agency this coming winter if they play. It’s just the reality of economics. It’s true in almost every business.”

Gammons also said, “The game has no chance of being restored to where they want it to go until 2023. Be realistic, rebuild it, and they won’t do it.”

There was always going to be a breaking point in sports with the salaries and ticket prices skyrocketing across sports. If anything good comes out of these dark days, perhaps sports will become affordable again for the general population someday.
