New England Patriots wide out Jordan Matthews has worn No. 87 for the majority of his career, but with Gronk already owning it he decided to go with No. 80 the number of fan favorite and Mr. Clutch, Danny Amendola wore.
But, before making it official, he made sure to check with the last member of the Patriots to wear the number — Danny Amendola.
“I called him before I got it,” Matthews said to reporters Thursday. “Yeah, I was just making sure because, like I said, I know what he did here. I don’t think that you have to get a number retired and all that stuff to understand you need to have respect for what guys do in a place like this – especially, I think they call him “Danny Playoff,” and I think he earned that nickname. I just wanted to make sure from him, ‘Hey, is this cool?’ He said it was.”
Matthews signed a one-year deal and will be challenging Phillip Dorsett, Kenny Britt and Cordarrelle Patterson for a roster spot. It could be an interesting new core as Tom Brady has often been able to bring out the best in talented receivers.
