News is ramping up today that the Philadelphia 76ers are going to move Jahlil Okafor via trade possibly at any moment. The 3rd year forward seems to really have fallen down the 76ers depth chart and does not appear in be in any of their future plans.
The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn reported that the Celtics are unwilling to part with a first-round pick for a potential “project” player. Okafor only 21 years old was the 3rd overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft had his 4th year option declined by Philadelphia making him an unrestricted free agent at end of year.
Okafor had an impactful rookie season averaging 17 points and 7 rebounds but ran into an injury plagued second season. This year he has only appeared in one game so the 76ers have not done a great job of showcasing him to drive up his trade value.
The Celtics are riding an 8-game wining streak going into Atlanta today and playing amazing basketball, despite the devastating loss of Gordon Hayward in the very first quarter of his Celtics debut during opening night. The Celtics are still struggling, as they did last year, in rebounding and points in the paint but did just get the debut of Marcus Morris and he had a big impact on the Celtics comeback road victory over OKC.
The 76ers have made it clear that Okafor is going to be moved and since he is not under contract after this season they may have to lower their demands. Hopefully, the Celtics will continue to monitor this situation and are able to make a deal. Okafor could be a great addition to this Celtics roster as he is young and showed his talents during his one year at Duke and then his rookie season. Put him in the right situation in Boston under the coaching of Brad Stevens and having Al Horford as a mentor could turn him into a future star!!
